The Clean Title Trap

Flood cars sometimes resurface with paperwork that does not tell the full story. A vehicle sold across state or province lines after a storm is worth extra scrutiny, especially if the price is low.

Look for Water Lines

Check carpeting seams for dried water lines, sand or silt. Inspect under the seats and in the spare tire well for musty smell or mud residue. Check connectors under the dash for corrosion that ordinary use does not produce.

Electrical Verification

Flood damage destroys modules and connector pins that fail months later. Ask that all electronics be demonstrated: headlights, ABS, airbags, infotainment and HVAC. A full inspection report flags non-functioning systems.

Know the Title Laws

Salvage branding protects you, but only when it is recorded. Confirm the title status with your department of motor vehicles and read the inspection report before you travel to see it.
