Towing a Trailer? What to Check on the Truck

Know the Payload, Not Just the Tow Rating

Manufacturers publish tow ratings, but payload and tongue weight matter just as much. Compare the sticker on the door frame with your trailer's real weight before you commit to a truck.

Inspect the Cooling and Brakes

Tow-heavy trucks run hot. Check the radiator, fan clutch and coolant condition, and inspect the brake pads, rotors and fluid. A transmission cooler is a sign the truck was set up for work.

The Hitch and Wiring

Check the receiver for cracks or rust, the ball size against your trailer, and the wiring harness with a tester. Bad wiring on trailer brakes is a silent safety failure.

Report, Then Test With Load

An inspection report covers brakes, suspension, cooling and structural rust. Then test-drive with the trailer connected on a route that includes a slight grade and a firm stop.
